Novos levantamentos indicam que existem menos de 3,2 mil tigres na natureza. Hoje, só restam apenas 7% do habitat natural destes animais. O extermínio dos tigres também está ligado à falta de informação. Em muitas partes da Ásia, os tigres são caçados porque partes do seu corpo são consideradas medicinais.

Tatu-bola (Tolypeutes tricinctus)

Quando o tatu-bola se sente ameaçado curva as costas, coloca a cauda ao lado da cabeça e se fecha em uma esfera de proteção. Seria difícil achar melhor mascote para a Copa do Mundo de 2014 do que um bicho que se transforma em bola e só existe no Brasil. A ONG Associação Caatinga, responsável pela campanha da mascote, espera chamar a atenção para o animal – que está ameaçado de extinção – e, a partir daí, conseguir mais apoio para preservar o habitat em que vive. Com isso, outras espécies do Cerrado e da Caatinga seriam beneficiados.

Three-banded armadillo (Tolypeutes tricinctus)

O uacari é branco e possui uma cara vermelha. Segundo os locais, se parece com um turista britânico que passou muitas horas expondo o rosto no sol forte. Essa peculiaridade lhe rendeu o apelido de macaco-inglês. É um primata especializado às condições da mata de várzea do Rio Solimões, na Amazônia. Acredita-se que toda a população esteja restrita à Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá (REDESM).


Uacari White (Cacajao calvus)

Infelizmente, fazendeiros abatem o felino para proteger seus rebanhos. No Pantanal, o Projeto Onçafari tenta salvar a espécie através do ecoturismo, mostrando que a onça pode ter mais valor se permanecer viva.

Jaguar (Panthera onca)

Hoje, a população de aproximadamente mil indivíduos se mantém estável, em pequenas manchas de Mata Atlântica, mas possibilidade de crescimento é pequena.

Em julho são avistadas as primeiras baleias no litoral brasileiro. A caça, colisões com embarcações, aprisionamento em redes de pesca, alteração do hábitat e poluição são os principais problemas enfrentados pela espécie em perigo.

O casal dominante e seus descendentes, dos dois ou três últimos anos, aprisionam peixes nas margens em uma ação coordenada. Os mais velhos dividem o alimento com os mais jovens. Porém, a pesca predatória vem reduzindo o número de suas presas. A contaminação por mercúrio proveniente da mineração e a caça ilegal são outros problemas enfrentados pela espécie.

Graças aos esforços do Projeto Arara Azul, localizado no Pantanal – que instalou ninhos artificiais e começou um trabalho de educação ambiental com a comunidade local – a população da espécie aumentou mais de quatro vezes em 20 anos. Na Amazônia e na região das “Gerais” (Maranhão, Bahia, Piauí, Tocantins e Goiás), onde o projeto não atua, as populações permanecem está estaveis espécie vulnerável.
